Local Markets
Shop like a local
Most towns in the region hold street markets weekly, some have only a few stalls while others can be hundreds. Whether small or large the locals will always gather to meet with friends and exchange news.
Most markets take over the main square of the town and larger ones spill out onto the streets nearby. Fresh produce from butchers, fishmongers, farmers, cheese and honey producers, fruit, flower, plants, veg are plentiful but also the markets have vendors selling footwear, leather ware, clothing, fabrics, toys and items for the house.
The larger markets often have vans selling snacks and porchetta and other local delicacies. Special markets include wine festivals, truffle markets and monthly markets are usually for antiques, artists and craftspeople sell their wares.
If you plan to visit a market be sure to start out early as most set up around 8.00am to 9.00am and it's all done and dusted by lunch time. Also traffic issues arise on market days with streets being closed off and parking is at a premium.
Unfortunately some markets are not held during July and August and some in December give way to Christmas markets.
Macerata market.
The market in Macerata with a couple of hundred stalls is held every Wednesday in the centro storico. The old town takes on a very different atmosphere, with street traders vying for your attention. This is a great place for a stroll and plenty of places to grab a coffee and watch the action unfold.
San Severino's market.
Held on a Saturday with around 70 stalls. A small market with stalls mainly in and around the central square.
Civitanova Marche market.
Also on Saturday this market has nearly 400 stalls which makes it one of the largest in the area, taking over the central square and many of the side streets. There is so much to see and it is well worth the effort of setting out early. Like Macerata there are plenty of places to stop for a coffee and after the morning shopping is done, enjoy a well earned lunch at one of the many bars and restaurants or visit the beach for a sunbathe and a swim.
Treia and Tolentino markets.
On Tuesday there are two local markets one in Treia which has less than 50 stalls and one in Tolentino which is much larger with three times the number of stalls.
