Sferisterio

Open air arena

Sferisterio

This magnificent semicircular arena was funded by wealthy citizens of Macerata. Built between 1823 and 1829, the Sferisterio, initially housed the game of ball with bracelet, very popular in the mid-nineteenth century and still played in Treia today. Football and lawn-tennis were subsequently played from 1909.

After a first series of theatrical performances at the end of the 19th century, it was thought the structure could be a perfect frame for opera performances. Major operas were subsequently staged after the First World War in 1921 and later vocal instrumental concerts.

The Arena Sferisterio Association, founded in December 1986 by the Municipality of Macerata and the Province administration aimed to promote and organise festivals, opera seasons, and other artistic and cultural events.

The Sferisterio Opera Festival is held from late July to mid-August, hosting thousands of spectators each year to the open air 3000 seat neoclassical arena. Besides the opera season the arena hosts many musical events like light music, jazz concerts, pop and rock bands.

Macerata is only 25 mins away from Le Cerqua and has parking near the arena or at the larger underground car park at the other end of the old town. From there you can stroll and see the centre that is full of interesting architecture, museums, churches and evidence of an elegant past.

If you want to have a drink or bite to eat before a show there are bars and restaurants in Piazzza Guiuseppe Mazzini adjacent to the arena and more a short 10 minute walk away in the Piazza della Libertà
